The Sega Game Gear
I still remember the time my family first got a Sega Game Gear. My dad was a truck driver and was on the road, he had my older sister with him at the time. I remember my mom getting a call, typical for when dad was on the road, and in one of them it was revealed that he bought a Game Gear for us! I was excited, especially since I loved my Sega Genesis so much! It was very cool to think of a Sega handheld system I could play on the run. And it was much better than Nintendo’s Gamebody because it had color and brightness, so you could play in the dark.
The hardest part about knowing we had one was waiting for it to get home and to get a chance to play it. And once I did it was fun! We only, to my knowledge, had one game, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. This game is far different from Sonic 2 on the Genesis, but all the same it’s enjoyable. But this game is much harder to beat! I’m not sure why, but Game Gear games seemed really hard to me! I can remember being on the road with my dad and really enjoying playing it, logging a lot of time. Back in those days Sega was the most innovative game company, and this didn’t fail to be the case. The Game Gear was years, literally, ahead of the Gameboy and what it could do. And all other consoles fell to Sega and Nintendo easily.
I can remember that my cousin, and best friend at the time, also had a Game Gear. He had one of the Disney games, Aladdin, and that was a fun game! It was really cool to us that we could not be hooked up to a television to be playing games. That was our first handheld consoles each, and I’ve never forgotten how fun that thing was. In fact that’s the only exact same console from my past that I still have. I threw away my original Genesis, and my original Playstation, but I still have my original Game Gear in my closet to this day. Which is pretty cool to me, that my memories and the console itself are still with me. Most of those memories are of anger of how hard Sonic is, but overall it’s been a good console to me. The only really bad part about it is that although it’s clearly much better than what it competed with, it only sold about 8 million units. But that’s still something that I can take away from that number, that I’m one of the few who got the superior over Gameboy Sega Game Gear.
