Tactical Stocks For The Remington 700 Short Action
In production for almost 50 years, the Remington 700 is one of the best selling centerfire hunting rifles of all time. The Rem 700 derives its popularity from its entry level price, amazing strength, inherent accuracy and easy upgrade path. It is the current sniper rifle of the US Army (M24 and XM2010), USMC (M40) and US Navy SEALs (Mk 13 Mod 5). The enduring popularity of the Model 700 has made it the first choice of aftermarket parts and clone manufacturers.
Only the AR15 is arguably more upgradeable than the Model 700. An unfortunate aspect of this is the cheap, throwaway plastic stocks that the manufacturer persists in fitting to keep the price of their entry level configurations down. A new or tuned trigger should be your first priority; the next best thing you can do for the accuracy of your rifle is to bed it in a decent laminated or synthetic stock. The best bedding you can get for a working rifle is to torque it down onto an aluminium bedding block or chassis. Stocks of this quality are a considerable investment, but you will never have to worry about packing your rifle into the hills in deep winter again.
Bell and Carlson’s range of stocks are light, rugged, hardwearing and affordable. They hand-wrap layers of composite materials including aramid fibers, graphite, fiberglass, epoxy gel coats and laminating resins onto an aluminium pillar bedding block, reinforced by polyurethane and milled fiberglass. This creates a stock that is amazingly rigid but which only weighs two and a half pounds. The Bell and Carlson Light Tactical stock is typical of their models and offers a great choice for right handed short action M700s used in a varmint or coyote control role. It features a cut out under the rear of the stock to take the left hand, offering more support to the rifle and control for the shot. The outer finish is a non-slip texture which will not be compromised by exposure to rifle cleaning products. You can bed this stock for a perfect cosmetic fit, but it’s not necessary for accuracy.
H-S Precision, the choice of the US Army for their M24 Sniper Weapon System, also employs a machined aluminum bedding block, bonded to fiberglass-reinforced, structural polyurethane foam. This self centers the rifle, securing it firmly against bumps and knocks. The H-S stock’s light (2lb. 12 oz.) perfectly rigid stiock is the result of hand laminating Kevlar and fiberglass cloth and uni-directional carbon fiber strands. These stocks are impervious to environmental conditions. H-S protect their stocks with a baked on polyurethane finish that is non reflective and textured for a firm hold in wet conditions. H-S precision’s PST series stock was chosen as the Remington 700 Police stock and is listed in floorplate and detachable magazine models in a choice of black or desert tan finish.
Both the H-S and B&C stocks are follow relatively traditional lines and neither will add significant weight to your 700. However, aesthetics were never a consideration to Accuracy International when they created the winning entry to the British Army’s mid 80s sniper rifle competition. The L96A1 uses epoxy resin to permanently bond the action to the chassis for the lifetime of the system. The result was an insanely accurate rifle that very few civilian shooters could afford. AI won many military users including Germany, the Netherlands, Belgoium, Sweden and Australia, but they wanted to break into the US civil market. To do this they adapted their chassis system to take Remington 700 short (.243 and .308) and long action (.300 Winchester) rifles.
AI’s ‘civilian’ stock, the AICS, is machined from a single billet of aerospace grade aluminium onto which the glass reinforced polymer panels are bolted. A V-shaped bedding block aligns the rifle and two bolts (supplied) hold it rigidly in place. This resulted in an odd slab-sided shape, but this makes the rifle easy to carry when slung with AI’s twin shoulder harness sling. Either AI or Harris bipods can be mounted. The rifle includes a thumbhole pistol grip and a screw adjustable raisable cheekpiece to allow for different heights of sight. Length of pull is adjusted by bolt on spacers. AI’s legendary quality magazines are available in 5 and 10 round double stack format for the .308 (or .308 parent case rounds like the 7mm-08 and .243) and a 5 shot format for the .300 Winmag. The Stage 1.5 and Stage 2.0 version differ in the latter boasting an ingenious folding mechanism, each being available in short and long action formats with panels in green, dark earth or black. The US Navy adopted the AICS for its Mk 13 Mod 5 Sniper Weapon System – the price of that prestige is 5 lb. 11 oz. and $1100 US dollars as of January 2010.
